Aromatherapy shampoo is the only shampoo I use now. But it wasn’t always that way. It was a long and nightmarish road for me, going from conventional chemical-laden shampoos, to some no-poo and home made shampoos that failed, to my wonderful current hair care products. I actually thought about calling this article my “No-Poo Nightmare.” Seriously.
NOTE: While I still love the shampoo discussed in this article, I have been able to find other brands of shampoo that I like *almost* as well locally, and no longer use this. It honestly just became too expensive to have our family of eight use this luxury-priced product. I've actually left NYR Organic, though I have been very happy with the products I have used from them. If you do choose to try the shampoo, it really is lovely. -Eileen, 9/29/2019

Three years ago, our whole family began the GAPS Diet Intro. And we learned that in order to get the best results with it, we needed to be careful not only about what we ate, but what we put on our skin and in our hair. It was one of the hardest aspects of the program for me, trying to find acceptable substitutes for all our old drug store personal care products. Sure, there were many suggested substitutes, but many of them simply did not work for us.
My efforts to find a safer kind of haircare ranged from trying learn how to quit shampoo, with baking soda with an apple cider vinegar rinse (it didn’t clean my hair at all, and I burned my eyes with vinegar) to trying to wash my hair with egg yolks. The problem with that is that some of the egg white stayed attached to the yolks, and actually got cooked into my hair with the warm water in the shower.
My kids laughed their heads off when they told me I had white goo in the back of my hair, and I told them it must be egg whites. Then, after I re-rinsed my hair and was sure the whites were out, my children relished telling me that I had missed some of the whites. I had to wash my hair a *third* time before all the egg white was gone. I was trying so hard, but nothing was working. I didn't know what to do!
After learning about the company’s very high safety standards for their ingredients, and trying the NYR Organic skincare samples, I knew this was a product line that I wanted for myself and my family. NYR Organic's products are formulated with top quality essential oils, and are a pure pleasure to use. I have never actually looked forward to washing and moisturizing my face. The scent of the essential oils in the skincare line just blew me away. But I was still curious about their hair care.
I have a big family, so it didn’t take long for me to have a reason to try all four of the scents available in shampoo and conditioner. My first order included the Nurturing Rose aromatherapy shampoo and conditioner for dry hair for me, and the Seaweed kind for my husband. The kids got the Orange Flower ones. Later on I also ordered the Nourishing Lavender shampoo.
The very first time I shampooed and conditioned my hair with the Rose products, I noticed my hair was silkier again after a long time of it looking frizzy and coarse. What a relief!
My husband and older children ask for the Invigorating Seaweed shampoo now when I reorder. And though I liked the Orange Flower just fine, the Rose aromatherapy shampoo is both my favorite scent, and a good one for me since my hair is dry after all the no-poo damage.
We tried the Nourishing Lavender aromatherapy shampoo once, and I noticed it did make my fine hair seem fuller. It does not lather as much as the other scents, but did clean my hair well. But I LOVE my shampoo lather! So if you are looking for something without as much lather, this is a great choice.
While it is not exactly aromatherapy for hair, NYR Organic’s organic argon oil is a wonderful, natural hair serum for after the shampoo and conditioner, especially if you blow dry your hair. I’m laying off heat appliances most of the time, but I still use a tiny bit of it to smooth down flyaway hair.
For a wonderful scalp conditioner, NYR Organic also has a Rosemary & Cedarwood Hair Treatment that you leave in for a deeper conditioning. Rosemary is said to help to encourage hair growth, and some say this product reduces flakiness of the scalp. It is supposed to be left in for a while, around 30 minutes or so.
I’ve actually applied it to some eczema on my fingers before bed, and it seemed to help. I think my return to the GAPS Diet has helped my eczema more than anything, and my eczema is gone now. But when my skin was dry and painful, this combination of products helped bring me immediate relief.
The bottom line in all this is, I get to use normal shampoo again, with the most amazing aromatherapy stress relief and scents, and because it is a more natural, paraben free shampoo, its free of the nasty ingredients in my old hair care products. And it leaves my hair clean and soft. I love my aromatherapy shampoo! I couldn't be happier about it! :)
